Research has shown that men are not as picky as women in choosing a spouse. In dating, almost all men can make a decision after looking at a woman's appearance, but women need to go through a "discriminatory" selection process.
The beautiful story of a talented woman has been circulating for thousands of years, and now researchers have confirmed it from a scientific perspective. A study by Indiana University, Bloomington, shows that when men choose a date, appearance becomes the decisive factor, while women value the "comprehensive strength" of each other more.
Speed dating
The research was led by Peter Todd, an expert in cognitive science, and the results were published in the Journal of the National Academy of Sciences on the 4th.
The researchers selected 26 males and 20 females residing in Munich, Germany as the observation subjects, ranging in age from 26 to their 40s. The research team arranged them to participate in a popular "Speed dating", that is, men and women talk one-on-one, and exchange conversation objects every 3 to 7 minutes. After all participants have completed a "round" of conversation, select the opposite sex who wants to meet again. If they are willing, they can arrange a second date.
Before the start of the date, participants fill out a survey questionnaire on mate selection criteria, including wealth and status, family and responsibility, appearance and temperament, health status and attractiveness, etc. Most of the answers are, I want to find someone who shares my interests.
Researchers found through careful comparison that there is a significant difference between the participants' final choice on dating and their pre 'promises' on the questionnaire. Most men choose women with beautiful appearance, while women prefer men who are rich and can bring people a sense of security.
Research also shows that men are not as picky as women in choosing a spouse. Out of 20 women, half were selected as a date again, but only one-third of 26 men had such luck. Todd said that almost all men can make a decision after looking at a woman's appearance, but women need to go through a "discriminatory" selection process.
Researchers say that women are also deeply aware of the importance of their appearance, and by measuring their physical condition, they look for men with "comprehensive strength" that matches them.
Evolutionary theory
Based on the above analysis, the researchers concluded that, like most mammals, Darwin's "picky females and competitive males" theory is also applicable to humans.
Todd said, "The evolutionary theory of psychology suggests that men and women will" exchange "certain characteristics of themselves with each other. Women use beauty to attract men with high overall qualities, and men will choose beautiful women who are attracted to them. This is beneficial for reproduction, and the number of benign offspring will greatly increase
Although a "Speed dating" test has revealed some rules, researchers need to conduct more dating tests to finally confirm this conclusion.
