Orchitis is an inflammatory disease of the testis caused by various pathogenic factors, which can be divided into non-specific, viral, fungal, spirochemical, parasitic, invasive, chemical and other types. Experts say that if orchitis is not treated in a timely manner, it can easily lead to infertility. What is this? How should orchitis be treated?
Why is orchitis prone to infertility?
Orchitis usually occurs 3-4 days after the onset of mumps, with erythema and edema in the scrotum, enlargement of one or both testicles with high tenderness, and occasional hydrocele of the tunica vaginalis. Usually, parotitis lesions can be detected, and after targeted treatment for about 10 days, testicular swelling subsides. About 1/3-1/2 of patients can observe testicular atrophy 1-2 months after onset. Generally, unilateral testicular involvement does not affect fertility. According to statistics, about 30% of patients with orchitis caused by mumps have irreversible destruction of spermatogenesis, and the affected testes are highly atrophied. If bilateral infection occurs, the testes can be atrophied, resulting in infertility caused by spermatogenesis disorder, but the androgen function is generally normal.
How to treat orchitis?
1. General treatment: For mild acute orchitis, physical therapy such as bed rest, local hot compress, and elevated scrotum are the main methods. Experts point out that this treatment is simple and effective for patients, and can prevent antibiotic abuse.
2. Antibiotic treatment: If the patient's condition does not improve after simple physical therapy, or if the patient's condition is severe, necessary antibiotic treatment must be given in a timely manner.
3. Surgical treatment: Patients with acute orchitis can undergo surgical treatment. If an abscess has formed in the testicles, it should be incised for drainage. Patients with severe testicular atrophy and destruction may undergo orchiectomy on the affected side.
4. Relieve testicular swelling and pain: Procaine can be used to block the affected spermatic cord, which can relieve pain, reduce swelling, promote testicular blood circulation, and protect spermatogenic function.
