A new study in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior has found that women's bodies play a more important role than their faces when men seek suitable "speed dating partners.".
The new study, completed by the University of Texas in the United States, surveyed 375 men and women. The researchers asked participants to consider choosing a date, but the other person's face or figure was hidden. Tests have found that men are more likely to choose women with better body curves as dating partners, but when choosing long-term relationships, women's faces appear to be more important.
Researchers say that a woman's figure and face are important clues or indicators of "reproductive value and fertility.". Many early studies on physical attractiveness have emphasized that factors such as body shape, skin texture, and waist to hip ratio are important factors in attracting the opposite sex. Women's faces express relatively rich information about their "reproductive value," while women's body shape can more reflect important information such as whether their "fertility" is strong at the moment. Research has found that both reproductive value and fertility cannot reach high peaks simultaneously. In the general population, reproductive value and fertility reach their highest values at the ages of 17 and 24, respectively.
