Due to the close anatomical and physiological relationship between the prostate and reproductive organs, doctors often advise patients to abstain from sexual intercourse when seeking medical attention. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the prostate belongs to the kidney and is responsible for reproduction. For patients with prostatitis, it is particularly emphasized to refrain from sexual intercourse, otherwise it will worsen the condition and reduce the therapeutic effect. I believe that this view only knows one thing and not the other. In general, patients with prostatitis should let sexual activity take its course and do it as they desire. If forced abstinence is used, it may worsen the condition and reduce the therapeutic effect.
The main pathological changes of prostate during inflammation are gland congestion, retention of glandular fluid and inflammatory secretions, and obstruction of prostatic tubules. Advocates of sexual abstinence believe that during sexual activity, the prostate and even the entire pelvic cavity become congested due to sexual impulses, exacerbating prostatitis. In fact, although people can self prohibit sexual activity, they cannot prohibit sexual impulses, which are normal physiological phenomena. Therefore, congestion of the prostate and even the entire pelvic cavity caused by sexual impulses cannot be prohibited. The duration of sexual activity and prostate congestion during sexual arousal is significantly different. Research has shown that during a single impulse, the time for pelvic congestion to subside after orgasm (ejaculation) is 15-30 minutes; If there is no orgasm, pelvic congestion can take half a day to a day to subside. This indicates that during sexual arousal, abstinence from sexual intercourse lasts much longer than involuntary prostate congestion. In addition, the prostatic fluid in semen accounts for about 1/3. During the process of sexual ejaculation, some inflammatory secretions in the glandular fluid should also be discharged, which will be beneficial to the alleviation and rehabilitation of inflammation. Furthermore, if sexual activity is repeatedly suppressed due to prolonged sexual abstinence, it may lead to decreased sexual function and even impotence. So it is not appropriate for prostatitis patients to abstain from sexual activity, and it should be left to nature.
However, if patients with prostatitis experience sexual dysfunction, it should be a different matter. The prostate, penis and even the entire perineum are dominated by the pelvic nerve plexus. When this nerve plexus is stimulated by prostatitis, its sensitivity is increased, and the causative central nervous system is easy to be excited. Therefore, some prostatitis patients may have hyperlibido. This situation often occurs in the early stages of prostate inflammation or exacerbation, and patients with excessive sexual demands cannot let nature take its course and should exercise restraint. Otherwise, not only does the prostate become more inflamed due to frequent congestion, but its sexual function can also transition from hyperactivity to weakness, leading to decreased sexual function.
The frequency of sexual demands in a healthy person is not constant and often varies with changes in physical and mental health. For patients with prostatitis, how to determine whether the increased libido during a certain period is normal or abnormal? When a patient experiences a significant increase in sexual desire during a certain period of time and the quality of each sexual activity is not as good as before, it may be a response to prostatitis, that is, abstinence. Abstinence should not be forced, or it may be controlled but not stopped. Appropriate abstinence methods can be used, such as labor, sports activities, listening to music and other methods to disperse energy and shift thinking to eliminate sexual fantasy and actively treat it.
So-called healthy individuals who have not been diagnosed with prostatitis should also be vigilant if they inexplicably experience increased libido but decreased sexual quality. It is necessary to go to the hospital for examination to rule out the possibility of prostatitis.
